Frequently Asked Questions - New Recycling Carts

What do I do with my current green 22-gallon recycling bin?
There are several things you may do with your old bin. First, we welcome you to keep the bin and use it for storage or as a way to gather recyclables before dumping them into the new cart.

Second, you can place the cart curbside the Week of April 13th on your normal recycling day. Place it out empty, and our Public Works Department will be picking up these containers during the day. The containers in good shape will be donated to the Peters Township School District to use, and the the worn, damaged containers will be recycled.

Finally, you may drop off the old container at the Peters Township Municipal Building any time Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and we will make sure it is recycled properly.  DO NOT PLACE THE OLD CONTAINERS IN THE NEW CARTS

Does my recycling pickup time or date change?  Does this impact my garbage pickup in any way?
Recycling Carts must be out by 6:00 a.m. of your scheduled pickup day.  Your recycling day remains the same, and the trash pickup day also remains the same.  Trash, like recycling, needs to be out by 6:00 a.m.  No Trash Carts are being issued by the Township - you are still responsible for your own trash bins/bags.

Where do I place my cart?
Carts should be placed curbside with the cart handlebar facing your house, and the arrows on the lid facing the road.  Carts must be 3 feet away from your trash cans/bags, and 3 feet away from other obstacles such as mailboxes, cars, etc.

Why the change from the current recycling system?
The new carts have increased capacity (65 gallon vs. 22 gallon) so you no longer have to use multiple containers to dispose of your recyclables or throw extra recyclables in the trash.  The carts have hinged lids, providing protection from the weather and animals, and wheels making them easy to maneuver. More material will be diverted from the landfill, increasing recycling, reducing disposal costs, and providing potential cost savings.

Who owns my new recycling cart?
Your new recycling cart is owned by Peters Township.  Peters Township purchased these carts with a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. If you sell your home, the cart is to remain at the house for use by the new homeowner.

What happens if my new recycling cart breaks?
The carts are maintained by Waste Management.  If your cart breaks, please contact the Peters Township Municipal Building at (724) 941-4180.  The Township can arrange to have Waste Management fix your cart.

How large is my new recycling cart?     Can I exchange my cart for a different size?
The new carts are 65 gallons. We are offering only one size cart. This cart was chosen after studying similar programs in other suburban Pittsburgh communities.

Where do I store my new recycling cart?
The carts can be stored in the garage or on the side or back of your house. The carts are durable and can be stored outside with no adverse effects.
